Difficulties in marketing
Guillermo del Toro
Themes of death, corruption, violence, horror and the supernatural appear throughout del Toro's films. Genres of drama, war, fantasy, horror. del Toro's films are only appealing to certain age groups, for the older generations may find some of his themes puerile and unnecessary, (El laberinto del fauno)was originally given 18 certificate classification). There is lots of competition between production companies: for exampleUniversal, New Line Cinema, Toma 78. His signature films, Cronos, Pans Labyrinth are not in the English language and this therefore, deters people from watching his films. |
Pedro Almodóvar
Almodóvar's films all have underlying themes of psychology , transgender and transexual characters that are often struggling coming to terms with their sexuality or relationship issues. Themes of violence, S&M and the obsession with the human form are recurrent throughout all of Almodóvar's films. His choice of genres often include melodrama, psychological thriller and mild horror, with none of his films in the English language. His films are made for a niche market. For example, his films are never marketed for general release in the UK, instead, being shown at art cinemas and Curzons'. Furthermore, his films are not made for profit, instead for a love of filmmaking. For example, The Skin I Live In had a budget of $13,000,000, however, it made a domestic loss, only making $3, 185, 812 at the Spanish box office. |
Success in Marketing
del Toro's later productions have a more accessible genres, making them open to all viewers. From moving away from directing to 'Del Toro Presents...' his films have had great success in the USA and internationally. For example, The Orphanage's foreign profit was $71, 447,703, showing that it had huge international success, even though it was a Spanish language film. |
Almodóvar's films show well at International film festivals: Cannes, and San Sebastian. They are not necessarily popular within the US market, but they are very popular and are often praised by the critics. Both Almodóvar and del Toro are extremely popular within the UK and with British media and press. |
